Central Park Hummingbirds

Ellen Michaels, formerly a model, is currently a wildlife and nature photographer specializing in photos of the birds, butterflies, insects, and flowers of Central Park in NYC.

The most common hummingbird in Central Park and NYC is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, which can be found feeding on salvia, cardinal flower, zinnia, bee balm, and trumpet creeper flowers from spring migration, April-May, through fall migration, August-November.

The best spots to see hummingbirds hunting for nectar in Central Park are the Conservatory Garden, Shakespeare Garden, the Dene Slope, the Ramble, and the North Meadow Butterfly Gardens.

This gallery features my photos of these fast-flying jewels, including a rare June nesting attempt in the park, as well as the historic Rufous Hummingbird - a rare western visitor that arrived across the street at the American Museum of Natural History garden and was feeding on Japanese mahonia.
